About David Axtell

Profile:

David Axtell is a former graduate of Falmouth School of Art and Design. An illustrator as well as a painter David is interested in the relationship between the interaction of people and the sea. From landscape studies to wide panoramas he is searching toward a gradual unspoken narrative which pulls the viewer into his paintings.

Inspired by figurative art from Millet to Edward Hopper David has been an illustrator for 15 years. In that time he has worked for a wide variety of publishers, including Random House, Egmont, OUP, Harpercollins and Macmillan. Producing book covers for Puffin Classics like the Diaries of Anne Frank and portraits toward biographies of HG Wells by Michael Foot.

He has illustrated childrens picture books by well known writers and Poets such as Mark Haddon 'The Ice Bear's Cave' and Valerie Bloom. ('Fruits - a Caribbean counting poem'- won the bronze prize in the Smarties children's book awards )

Originally from Oxford he has lived and worked in North Cornwall for the last ten years, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings.
